THE BLACKFIN MAKO VMS

The BLACKFIN MAKO VMS is a new adjustable socket volume management system (VMS) designed to help amputees maintain a perfect socket fit. The MAKO system allows the user to make micro adjustments to the socket by moving the socket wall inward and outward, to perfectly manage volume changes throughout the day. BLACKFIN MAKO VMS uses hidden internal panels coupled with a powerful drive mechanism to help translate panels inward and outward to optimized socket adjustability The MAKO VMS provides a lightweight adjustable socket solution that provides industry leading skeletal stabilization in the presence of limb volume loss. The BLACKFIN MAKO VMS uses a lightweight drive unit that can easily be adjusted by the turn of a dial. The system offers industry leading mechanical advantage and one of the lowest profile designs available. MAKO VMS offers a smooth socket wall with no loose cabling or panels.

BLACKFIN MAKO VMS

One of the most challenging problems amputees contend with is limb volume fluctuation. When the prosthetic socket it is made, it is a static shape designed to fit the limb size (or specific limb volume) at the time of casting. As the prosthetic user wears the prosthesis, the fluid in the limb is gradually pumped out during regular ambulation. This loss of fluid results in extra space in the socket. A loose socket allows the skeletal structures in the limb to move and crash into the socket wall. This skeletal instability results in discomfort or tissue injury for the prosthetic user. The MAKO VMS solves volume loss problems by creating a dynamic socket that can be adjusted with the turn of a dial while at the same time improving skeletal stability in the socket maximizing comfort and function.
