One of the most challenging problems amputees contend with is limb volume fluctuation. When the prosthetic socket it is made, it is a static shape designed to fit the limb size (or specific limb volume) at the time of casting. As the prosthetic user wears the prosthesis, the fluid in the limb is gradually pumped out during regular ambulation. This loss of fluid results in extra space in the socket. A loose socket allows the skeletal structures in the limb to move and crash into the socket wall. This skeletal instability results in discomfort or tissue injury for the prosthetic user.
